God’s Whispers in Film: It’s Never Too Late to Follow Your Dreams Ep. 2

Recently, my partner and I sat down to record the second episode of our podcast, God’s Whispers in Film. We dove into one of the most powerful and personal themes we’ve explored so far: passion—and the truth that it is never too late to start chasing your dreams. Whether you’ve buried your calling under the weight of responsibilities or let fear put your creativity on pause, this episode may inspire you to have a go. Those desires you feel—the tug to write, to create, to build, to sing—they’re not random. You can always follow your desires and passions, no matter your age or stage in life, it’s never too late to listen to them and start expressing the unique soul God has made you to be.

In today’s world, we’re often told that by a certain age, we should have it all figured out. We should be established, secure, and have our dreams neatly wrapped up in a package of success. But what if we’ve been getting it all wrong? What if the dream isn’t about when you start, but the courage to simply begin?

In this episode, we explored the notion that chasing your dreams isn’t about perfection—it’s about courage. It’s about showing up even when you’re afraid, even when the doubts creep in and tell you you’re not good enough. It’s about finding the strength to pursue what makes you feel alive, no matter how many years it’s been since you last thought about it.

Rediscovering Your Dreams

One of the key themes we discussed in the episode was about how it’s never too late to rediscover your passion—and I think no film illustrates this better than Sing. You might be thinking, “Wait, isn’t that just a kids’ movie with singing animals?” And yes, while it’s light-hearted and fun, the underlying messages in Sing are full of depth and insight for anyone of any age. It’s a film about dreaming big, overcoming fear, and finding the courage to pursue what sets your heart on fire.

The story centres on Buster Moon, an optimistic koala who owns a failing theatre and is desperate to save it. His solution? A singing competition. Along the way, we meet characters with diverse backgrounds, each facing their own struggles and doubts, but each with one thing in common: a dream. Whether it’s Rosita, the overworked mum who has sacrificed her own passions to raise a family, or Ash, the punk-rock porcupine who is battling insecurities and a toxic relationship, these characters remind us that dreams can feel impossible, but they’re worth pursuing.

What stood out to us during the podcast—and what resonates deeply—is that Sing shows us that no matter how old you are, no matter how far you’ve gone off course, there is always time to reconnect with your passion and start chasing your dream. Buster Moon, despite his many failures and financial struggles, never gives up on his dream of reviving his theatre. The characters, despite their personal hurdles, take the stage with courage and vulnerability, showing that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

The Timeless Pursuit of Dreams

One of the most empowering aspects of Sing is the message that age, circumstances, or previous failures don’t have to define your dreams. This theme is central to what we discussed in our podcast episode. Whether you’re 20, 40, or 60+, your dreams still matters, and it’s worth embracing because a step closer to your passions is a step closer to discovering your unique personality. Too often, society convinces us that we’re too old to try something new or that we missed our chance. But the truth is, you’re never too old to pursue your calling.

What if your dream wasn’t meant to be a perfectly timed success story? What if it was meant to be a journey of faith, growth, and discovery?

Rediscovery Through Creativity

In Sing, the characters are forced to face their fears, their past failures, and their doubts. But in the process, they also rediscover parts of themselves they had long buried. Ash, for instance, learns to stand up for herself and embrace her true voice, not just as an artist, but as a person.

It’s the same for all of us. When we return to our passions—whether it’s writing, painting, singing, or even something as simple as taking up a new hobby—we find pieces of ourselves that have been neglected or forgotten. We reconnect with our true essence, and that process of rediscovery can be a powerful source of healing and growth.

The Barriers That Keep Us Stuck

Of course, pursuing a dream isn’t always as simple as just deciding to follow your heart. In Sing, we see how characters like Rosita struggle with the pressure of being a mother and a wife, leading her to sacrifice her own desires for the sake of her family. Buster, on the other hand, faces financial constraints and the weight of running a failing business. And let’s not forget about the toxic relationships that hold people back. Ash’s relationship with her controlling boyfriend is a prime example of how unhealthy dynamics can suffocate creativity and self-expression.

But these challenges don’t make the dream impossible. They just require more faith, more patience, and a willingness to be uncomfortable in our fear and still take action even if we’re scared.

Navigating Toxic Relationships and Limiting Beliefs

One of the biggest hurdles we face in chasing our dreams is the people around us. In the film, Ash’s toxic relationship stifles her ability to express herself, but through the competition and the support she finds from others, she begins to break free and embrace who she is. This is such a powerful reminder that relationships, whether familial, romantic, or even internal, can sometimes hold us back.

And it’s not just about others’ expectations of us—it’s about how we allow self-doubt and fear to rule our decisions. Like many of the characters in Sing, we can get stuck in cycles of inadequacy. But we can live in these limiting beliefs or we can discover why we feel this way, process it and then choose to accept God’s truth not our own false beliefs we’ve been taught. Only then can we have the faith that things will change.

Being yourself and the Pursuit of Passion

A key takeaway from both Sing and our podcast episode is the importance of being being yourself in the pursuit of your passion. It’s not about perfection. It’s not about doing it the “right” way. It’s about showing up as you are and embracing your unique gifts.

In a world that often values conformity over individuality, pursuing your authentic passion can feel like a radical act. But that’s where the magic happens. When you step into your own light, you create space for others to do the same.

Meena: Moving Through Fear to Find Your Voice

We can’t talk about Sing without mentioning Meena—the shy, soft-spoken elephant with the biggest voice in the room. Her story might be the most relatable of all because it’s not about external obstacles—it’s about the internal ones. While all the characters have both external and internal obstacles Meena isn’t fighting off critics, financial stress nor dos she have a family to look after. She’s battling the one thing almost all of us have that prevents us from taking action—fear. That quiet, paralysing fear that tells you to stay small. To hide. To not even try.

And yet… that’s what makes her journey so powerful. With encouragement, patience, and a safe space to be vulnerable, Meena eventually steps into the spotlight and lets her voice be heard. And when she does? It’s breathtaking.

Her story is a reminder that so many of us already have the gift—we’re just afraid to use it. Maybe it’s a talent we haven’t exercised in years. Maybe it’s an idea we’ve talked ourselves out of. But like Meena, we’re not meant to keep it hidden. God places these gifts in us for a reason. Sometimes, all it takes is a little faith, a little courage, and the right community around us to help us believe again.

If you’ve been sitting on something because you’re scared to fail, scared to be seen, or scared to even try—Meena represents YOU.

Final Thoughts: Reclaim Your Dream

As we discussed in our podcast and as Sing so beautifully illustrates, it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Your calling doesn’t have an expiration date. No matter what you’ve been through, no matter what you’re up against, your dream still matters.

So, if there’s something you’ve been putting off or a passion you’ve buried, I encourage you today to start. Don’t wait for the “perfect time” because that time is now. The world needs what only you can give, and you owe it to yourself to embrace the journey.

I hope this blog inspires you as much as this episode and film inspired me. If you missed the podcast episode, be sure to check it out.
